In today’s day and age, there is an immense focus on brain development in the early years.
One of the main factors that can help ensure that your child reaches all the developmental milestones is the consumption of the right kind of food. A healthy and balanced diet is not only good for a child’s body but for their brains too. It is proven to improve cognitive function, mental processing, memory and concentration.
Starting from pregnancy to the child’s early years, nutrition should be given utmost importance to. We have collaborated a list of “super foods” which will help boost your child’s brainpower!
- Greens: Green vegetables are an excellent source of antioxidants to keep the brain cells healthy. They are rich in nutrients such as vitamin K and folic acid. Some common green veggies to include in your child’s diet are spinach, peas & broccoli.
- Fish: Fish are a great source of omega-3 fatty acid which are much needed for brain growth.They improve mental skills and ensure healthy brain development and thus are often referred to as ‘brain food.’ Salmon and tuna sandwiches (made in whole wheat bread) make a great lunch for your child.
- Eggs: They are a great source of protein, and their yolks have choline, an important nutrient for memory development. Eggs are a perfect breakfast food for children!
- Peanut Butter: Kids love peanut butter which makes it a great option for a healthy snack. Peanut butter is rich in the antioxidant vitamin E that protects the brain membrane. It also has thiamine which is good for the brain and glucose which provides energy. Peanut butter can be eaten with fruits or put in sandwiches / milkshakes.
- Milk & Yogurt: The antioxidant glutathione found in milk has a protective effect on the brain.Dairy is also an excellent source of vitamin D, which children need in greater amounts than adults. A glass of milk every day is essential for your child’s diet and overall development.
- Berries: Berries rank very high in antioxidants that help improve memory and prevent the brain from damage. Seeds from berries also contain omega-3 fats that help with brain functioning. Berries can be eaten as a snack or dessert and can be used in smoothies!
- Beans: They are good for children’s brains since they have protein, complex carbohydrates, fibre, vitamins and minerals. Kidney and pinto beans are good choices as they contain a great amount of omega-3 fatty acids, which are great for brain growth and cognitive function. Add beans as a salad topper, as fillers for lettuce wraps, or even add them to spaghetti for a more nutritious meal.
We understand it can be difficult to get your child to eat all the above-mentioned foods. However, as a parent you must try your level best to ensure that these foods are a part of your little ones’ food intake so that they can have a healthy body and mind!
